Today I met with stakeholders from a number of industries to discuss the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s strong plan for TasTAFE which will make it easier for Tasmanians to get jobs.
This plan, which has been endorsed by industry, is about delivering the training students need when and where they need it and meeting the skills needs of the sector.
Despite baseless claims from the opposition, I’d like to be clear that no staff will be worse off under our plan and students will do better.
In fact, course fees will remain low and heavily subsidised.
In addition, a total of 80 per cent of all future skills funding will be invested in TasTAFE.
Underpinning our plan is a $98.6 million investment for new and improved training facilities, and better access to training for regional and rural Tasmanians.
Importantly – TasTAFE employees will not be paid less and will retain the same salary and entitlements, with no changes to superannuation or long service leave.
We want more staff and will employee an additional 100 teachers across a range of specialities.
Last week we launched a new recruitment campaign which presents a fantastic opportunity for skilled workers to consider a new career path teaching in Tasmania’s public vocational education and training provider.
With the TasTAFE (Skills and Training Business) Bill 2021 passing the Lower House, I would like to thank the industry stakeholders and members of the community who provided valuable feedback through the consultation process.
Overwhelming feedback through the workshops and consultation process found that TasTAFE as it currently operates, is unable to adapt to the shifting demands of employers and individuals at the pace required.
The Tasmanians Government wants to deliver opportunities for all Tasmanians, our investment in TasTAFE is to ensure we are delivering the training students need, where and when they need it.
It’s about giving them the very best opportunity possible to secure a job in Tasmania.
