Long-Term Plan for Healthcare in Tasmania 2040

The Tasmanian Liberal Government’s vision for the future of health care in Tasmania has been confirmed with the final version of the Long-Term Plan for Healthcare in Tasmania 2040 released.

The Long-Term Plan provides a blueprint of how the Tasmanian Liberal Government will achieve a world-class, innovative, integrated healthcare system for all Tasmanians.

The final version of the Long-Term Plan incorporates feedback received during the public consultation on the exposure draft of the document.

Premier and Minister for Health, Jeremy Rockliff, said the release of the final version of the Long-Term Plan was an important milestone in the Government’s health reform agenda.

“The Long-Term Plan outlines how our Government will deliver, in partnership with the Tasmanian community, its plan for all Tasmanians to be supported by a world-class, innovative and integrated health system,” the Premier said.

“Our Plan will see a more connected health system that meets the needs of Tasmanians now, and into the future.

“We are committed to building a sustainable health system and we will do this by connecting care across acute, subacute, rehabilitation, mental health, primary care, and care in the community. This includes in key areas such as supporting the health of older Tasmanians and the use of health navigators to assist people in accessing the services they need.

“The Plan is supported by regionalised profiles which identify the needs of each region for enhancement and expansion and subsequent priorities, and how they will be delivered over the next five years.”

Progress toward the Long-Term Plan is already underway, through key initiatives including the 10-year digital health transformation strategy, hospital masterplanning, and 20-year infrastructure planning.

Other key initiatives that are underway or soon to commence include:

  • The development of central virtual care hubs;
  • Equitable access to endoscopy with $38 million to deliver an additional 22,000 endoscopy procedures by 2027;
  • Implementing nurse-led clinics to address growing outpatient care demand and reduce wait times for public outpatient services;
  • Masterplan work for the St John’s Park Health Precinct; and
  • Masterplan work for district hospitals and community health centres.

The development of an implementation plan is well underway and will be carefully staged so that actions that deliver the greatest immediate effect for Tasmanians are prioritised.

The Tasmanian Government acknowledges and thanks the individuals and organisations who prepared written submissions regarding the Long-Term Plan.
