The first piece of permanent infrastructure has now been completed at Macquarie Point, paving the way for further development to occur.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering this once-in-a-lifetime development for Tasmanians now and into the future, with the road completion one of a number of recent milestones for this critical project.
Stage one of the Northern Vehicular Access project, worth $4.4 million, provides entry and exit into the site from the Tasman Highway and incorporates bike and pedestrian paths and a 10-metre-wide corridor for a future transit solution.
Fulton Hogan was awarded the contract to construct the road and install service infrastructure to support future development onsite.
Completed works include the installation of natural gas, NBN, stormwater, sewer, high and low voltage power and water to support future site development.
Minister for State Growth, Michael Ferguson, said completion of the road also ensures access to The Escarpment – the first parcel of land offered to open market under a Competitive Bid Process, as well as necessary access to other land parcels onsite.
“Around 21 separate contractors and 24 local Tasmanian suppliers have been employed during the project to provide materials and services for the project’s delivery,” Minister Ferguson said.
“Stage two of the road will include developing a northern entry point to support the Antarctic and Science Precinct as specified under Hobart City Deal.”
Macquarie Point Development Corporation CEO Mary Massina said remediation at the site is also well advanced and private development a step closer.
“The Evaluation Panel, established by the Macquarie Point Development Corporation, has selected its preferred proponents to continue to the next stage of the competitive bid process for the Escarpment,” Ms Massina said.
“We have had strong interest in the site and two outstanding shortlisted developers will now move through to the Request for Proposal stage.”
The road will remain closed to vehicles due to ongoing site development but will continue to be accessible to pedestrians and cyclists.
