Lifting of NILS cap to expand access to household essentials

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is focused on delivering for all Tasmanians and we understand cost of living pressures are currently affecting Tasmanian families.

That is why today we are announcing the expansion of the No Interest Loan Scheme, which will increase from $1500 to $2000, as part of our targeted support in our vital community service sector. Those applicants experiencing family violence situations will be eligible for a loan of up to $3000.

The NILS program provides a no-interest loan option for low-income Tasmanians to purchase essential household supplies and services, preventing families from potentially being trapped in a cycle of predatory pay day loans.

In 2021 alone, the program enabled Tasmanian families to purchase 492 fridges, 352 heat pumps, 391 washing machines and repair 600 cars.

Our investment in the NILS program of more than $4.5 million across four years (from 2021) increases the ability for Tasmanians to access safe, fair, and affordable credit, at a time when they need it most.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is strengthening the future for Tasmanians across the State and we will continue to put targeted supports in place, where needed, for those who need it most.
