International Day for People with Disability

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is proud to celebrate the contribution Tasmanians with disability make to our community as part of International Day of Persons with Disability.

We are committed to making Tasmania a place where people with disability are empowered and supported to reach their full potential.

I encourage all Tasmanians to take the opportunity to celebrate stories of community inclusion as well as acknowledge the important contribution of Tasmanians living with disability.

In addition, the Tasmanian Government announced a review into the Disability Services Act 2011 earlier this year, to ensure we have a contemporary vision for a safe and inclusive Tasmania for people with disability.

Today, following feedback from the community, I am announcing that we are extending the submission period for the Review until COB on Wednesday 22 December, to allow more time for people to have their say.

It is so important that we hear directly from the community about what is important for them to see reflected in Tasmanian Disability Services legislation, including with regard to a future Disability Services Commissioner.

Any stakeholder can make an individual or group submission in response to the Discussion Paper, and submissions can be written, verbal or in any inclusive format that the participant is comfortable with.

Information on the review can be found on here: www.communities.tas.gov.au/disability/tasmanian_disability_services_act_2011/tasmanian-disability-services-act-2011-review

Finally, I welcome the forthcoming release of Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031 later today, which will support our community to continue to drive change over the next decade.

This crucial strategy will guide our policies and provide the framework to ensure that, as Governments, we are upholding rights, supporting inclusion, and improving participation of people with disability.

Improving employment opportunities for people with disability will also be a key focus of this strategy.
