Increased supply helping to ease rental market pressures

The Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering on its plan to increase housing supply and relieve pressure on the rental market.

The most SQM Research data shows that Hobart has the highest level of rental listings since 2014. At 653 properties on the market sine 9 February 2014.

This is on the back of the latest CoreLogic Quarterly Rental Report that confirmed Tasmania recorded the lowest 12-month rental increase of all the States, along with having the highest vacancy rate – and well ahead of the national average on both.

Minister for State Development, Construction and Housing, Guy Barnett, said that this is proof our housing plan is working.

“We know that increasing land and housing supply is the best way to ease housing and rental pressures which is why we are funding the most ambitious social and affordable housing plan in Tasmanian history,’’ Minister Barnett said.

“While these figures are pleasing, we know that increased supply is the answer and will continue working to relieve the pressures on the Tasmanian rental market.

``Our $1.5 billion plan will deliver 10,000 new affordable homes and units by 2032 to meet the diverse housing needs of Tasmanians, including youth, the elderly, those living with a disability, men, women and families.

``We also set an ambitious target to deliver 1500 social and affordable homes by June 2023 and we are tracking well with 914 of these homes completed as at the end of April 2023,’’ Minister Barnett said.

A strong Tasmanian economy is allowing the Rockliff Liberal Government to secure the State’s future and invest in what’s important to Tasmanians, like more social and affordable housing, health, education and health.
