The Tasmanian Liberal Government will contribute $150,000 towards a masterplan for the redevelopment of the Salvation Army New Town site to increase services for vulnerable Tasmanians.
This is a part of our plan to building a better, brighter future for Tasmanians and is an investment in the essential services that Tasmanians need, especially following COVID-19.
The proposed redevelopment will transform the ageing site in New Town into a purpose-built ‘village’ which provides tailored support for alcohol, drug, mental health, housing and family violence services.
The site is expected to include a fit-for-purpose 30-bed Alcohol and Other Drugs Treatment Centre, expanded family violence centre, 20 new affordable housing units, community centre, with the potential for complimentary commercial and retail outlets such as a medical centre, child care services, community garden and a Salvos Store and Warehouse.
Taking a more integrated approach between Government and community based service delivery is supported by our recently launched Reform Agenda for the Alcohol and Other Drugs Sector in Tasmania, as well as the Rethink 2020 mental health plan and the Tasmanian Mental Health Reform Program.
Over the 2020-21 Budget and Forward Estimates there is a significant investment of $595.5 million for Statewide Mental Health Services, including an additional $16 million for new initiatives.
These initiatives are all about ensuring Tasmanians can get the right service, at the right time, in the right place.
