The Tasmanian Liberal Government is absolutely committed to taking action on housing and homelessness.
Today, I was pleased to table legislation to create Homes Tasmania. The Homes Tasmania Bill 2022 and Homes Tasmania (Consequential Amendments) Bill 2022 delivers on the commitment made by the Tasmanian Liberal Government in February this year to create a dedicated housing authority, to be called Homes Tasmania.
Homes Tasmania reflects the importance of having not just a roof over your head, but also a place to call home. It also reflects the broader role that the authority will play in ensuring the wellbeing of those in need of housing and homelessness services, as well as in building liveable communities.
Homes Tasmania will be responsible for delivering improved housing services and increasing the supply of social and affordable homes in Tasmania. It is a critical step in delivering our Government's record $1.5 billion investment for 10,000 new social and affordable homes by 2032.
Following public consultation, the Bill has been updated with stakeholder feedback. I was pleased with the positive feedback received, showing we are on the right track to deliver improved housing outcomes and support for Tasmanians. I want to thank all those who took the time to make a submission and engage during the consultation process. The feedback is important in ensuring we get this legislation right to improve housing outcomes in Tasmania.
The legislation will establish a powerful body that will ensure we can provide the right supports to those who need them, when and where they need them. It will provide Tasmanians with the most integrated and cohesive housing system in the country.
I look forward to working with my Parliamentary colleagues to pass this historic and important legislation to support Tasmanians in need of housing support right now, and deliver our plan for the future.
