Further section of Midland Highway upgrade completed and returned to 110 km/h

The Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering safer more efficient roads around our great State.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson, said a further five kilometres of the Midland Highway safety upgrade has been completed with the speed limit restored to 110 km/h on Thursday, 8 June 2023.

“The completed section is part of the Oatlands section of the $565 million Midland Highway 10 Year Action Plan and extends north from the highway’s junction with Mud Walls Road," Minister Ferguson said.

“The return to normal speed limits continues the commitment to restore speed limits progressively as sections are completed. This will help reduce delays as we continue work on the final three projects of the Action Plan.

“The three projects total more than 50 kilometres of road upgrades, including 16.4 kilometres near Oatlands, 14 kilometres near Ross and a 20-kilometre section north of Campbell Town.

“The upgrades include widening the road, extending sealed shoulders, additional overtaking lanes, and installing flexible safety barriers to improve safety and prevent run-off-road and head-on collisions.

“The speed limit will stay reduced throughout the rest of the project sites, mostly at 40 km/h during works and 60 km/h after works with some exceptions.

“A total of 9 kilometres was returned to 110 km/h at the end of March 2023 and we will continue to return completed sections to normal speed limits whenever possible as the works progress.

“We will also be revising our traffic management provisions to ensure future upgrade works on the Midland and Bass highways limit the length of road that can be subject to speed limits of 60 km/h or lower at any one time.

“The 10 Year Action Plan is improving road safety and efficiency, which will save lives on Tasmania's key north-south freight route.

“We are on the final stretch and are expecting all projects to be wrapped up by early 2025. We appreciate the public’s patience while these important upgrades are completed.”
