Full steam ahead for Cartela project

The future of the Cartela is now more secure following a $1 million grant from the Tasmanian Liberal Government which will see the steamship deliver a world-class tourism experience for years to come.

With funding secured, the Steamship Cartela Trust can now progress the restoration project of the iconic vessel.

The $1 million funding boost will be used to build and install a ship lift for the steamship as part of the Franklin Maritime Precinct.

Premier and Minister for Tourism, Jeremy Rockliff, said that the Tasmanian Liberal Government has been a strong supporter of the restoration project over the past decade and has previously provided $493,000 to support the Trust in progressing its vision.

“Our government recognises the tourism potential of restoring the ship to its former glory and it is an important part of our vision for the future of the Franklin Foreshore.

“We look forward to working with the Steamship Cartela Trust to return this rare piece of Tasmanian history to the waters.”

The restoration will complement the Government’s plans to expand the Wooden Boat Centre which will showcase Tasmania’s maritime heritage as part of Tourism Tasmania’s “Reimagining our Regions” plan.

As part of this plan, the Cartela Trust will work with service providers to deliver Shipwright courses to create new skills pathways for workers with a special focus on indigenous employment and support for veteran workers.
