Tasmania’s export sector has continued its strong growth according to the latest Tasmanian Trade Scorecard.
The annual Trade Scorecard 2020-21 shows that goods exports recorded growth of 5.2 per cent across the 20-21 financial year, and services exports contributed $646 million - despite the challenges facing our demonstration and international markets.
Importantly, our goods and services exports reached $5 billion over the year, keeping us well on track to achieve our ambitious target of $15 billion in export trade by 2050.
We know that Tasmania has what the world wants, and this is yet another testament to the resilience of Tasmanian exporters that have come through the pandemic and are looking to the future with optimism.
The annual Trade Scorecard is a check of progress against the goals of the Tasmanian Trade Strategy 2019-2025 and focuses on the areas of building trade in key sectors, showcasing Tasmania in priority markets, supporting trade logistics and market access and building export capability in Tasmanian businesses.
The Scorecard shows that almost 1500 businesses accessed a Tasmanian Government trade-related service across the year and more than 450 Tasmanian businesses were promoted directly to, or within, their target export markets.
Across the year we also saw Tasmanian exporters benefitting from 126 million site visits through platforms such as the Trade Tasmania and Buy Something Tasmanian websites, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, WeChat, Yizhibo and Forbes and raising awareness and increasing demand for Tasmanian products.
The Scorecard highlights that our export trade has been a driving force of Tasmania’s economic recovery from the impacts of COVID-19 and that our increased focus on growing existing markets, and opening of new opportunities, is working.
