Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) Discovery and Wilderness Rangers have completed training this week and will soon be out and about supporting the visitor experience right across Tasmania.
Our Wilderness Rangers and Discovery Rangers play an important role in keeping the public safe, protecting our wild places, and educating our visitors on the natural and cultural values of Tasmania’s extensive reserve estate.
Wilderness Rangers enhance walker safety and knowledge, provide education on Leave No Trace principles and interpret the natural and cultural heritage of some of our most remote areas.
Our Wilderness Rangers also raise awareness of the Walker Registration System, which assists to protect and manage visitor numbers in Tasmania’s wilderness.
Wilderness Rangers will be based at Mt Anne, Lake Rhona, Eastern Arthurs, Western Arthurs and the Walls of Jerusalem. Overland track rangers will also work between Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair and across the Frenchman’s Cap track.
This season there are 13 Discovery Rangers and 12 Wilderness Rangers working across the State.
PWS Discovery Rangers will be providing dedicated educational programs across Tasmania’s extensive reserve estate, including at some of Tasmania’s most popular National Parks, including Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair, Freycinet, Mt Field, Maria Island and Narawntapu.
The Discovery Ranger Program provides opportunities for Tasmanians and visitors alike to connect with nature through interpretation and education activities.
The program also partners with local councils and volunteer organisations to help raise awareness of conservation programs, including protecting our shorebirds and understanding more about the endangered Maugean Skate.
Key objectives this season include education on how to protect and respect Tasmania’s natural and cultural values, while encouraging people to explore our beautiful landscapes, which play an important role in supporting our physical and mental health and wellbeing.
Discovery Ranger Program activities will soon be promoted on the PWS website and Facebook page.
