Tasmania is home to a variety of landscapes and wetlands, including ten wetlands of international significance.
Today is World Wetlands Day which aims to raise global awareness about the importance of wetlands for the environment and the public and marks the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) in Ramsar, Iran in 1971.
Minister for Parks, Nick Duigan, said the Tamar Island Wetlands Centre is marking the day over a whole month!
“There will be a range of free activities to mark the occasion, including Tai Chi, airdry clay workshops, water life activity, origami and colouring in activities. There really is something for everyone,” Minister Duigan said.
“Our parks deserve to be celebrated, and I’m so glad this event has turned into a whole month of celebration to highlight our wildlife, insects and birdlife at the wetlands.”
Tamar Natural Resource Management is also on-site at the Centre on 2 February with a display educating the public on microplastics in the state’s waterways and water life.
The theme of WWD this year is Wetlands and Human Wellbeing which recognises the benefits wetlands and nature has on sustainable development and for the public’s wellbeing.
