Youth Homelessness Working Group to implement Taskforce recommendations

The Tasmanian Government is taking action to address youth homelessness and implement the recommendations of the Under 16 Youth Homeless Taskforce.

The Taskforce was established to develop recommendations addressing youth homelessness and improvements in how our service system responds to the needs of young people at risk of homelessness.

A working group will be established to oversee immediate actions following the allocation of $513,000 to address youth homelessness as part of the Government’s COVID-19 homelessness response, and provide advice to the Government on how the Taskforce’s longer term recommendations can best be implemented.

The initial funding allocation will support additional services including intensive case management, outreach support and family mediation for young people at risk of homelessness around the state.

The working group will include representatives from government agencies and a range of community organisations from across Tasmania, with the Terms of Reference and the working group membership now being finalised.

The Government also remains committed to delivering key projects for young people including the delivery of new youth supported accommodation facilities in Burnie and Hobart, which will be built by 2022, and the expansion of Thyne House in Launceston.
