Waste and Resources Recovery Forum

The Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Forum has commenced today bringing together industry experts and stakeholders to discuss current waste management issues.

The Forum is held by the Waste Management Association of Australia (WMAA) and follows consultation by the Hodgman Liberal Government on a new waste strategy – the Tasmanian Waste Action Plan.

The forum provides an opportunity for the waste and recycling industry to get together to discuss current issues, including the increased activity across Australia in the waste policy space, following the decision by China to tighten its controls on the import of recyclable materials.

We have commitments to reduce packaging waste, work with industry leaders to boost consumer awareness, increase recycling capacity and boost demand through market development.

The draft Tasmanian Waste Action Plan is expected to be released for public consultation in early 2019.

Out targets for the environment include:

  • Making Tasmania the tidiest state with the lowest incidence of litter in the country by 2023 through a range of initiatives, including
    • increasing penalties for illegal rubbish dumping
    • using Community Service Orders for rubbish removal from Parks, reserves and public areas
    • expanding the reporting of litter offences with an illegal rubbish disposal app - $100,000
    • providing additional support for Keep Australia Beautiful, Tasmania - $15,000 per annum.
  • Implementing Climate Action 21, and achieving our renewable energy target for Tasmania to be 100% self-sufficient by 2022.
  • Streamlining the environmental regulatory framework so that assessment and regulation processes are efficient and remain contemporary.
