Fifty-three Australian lives were saved in 2019 thanks to the incredible generosity of 18 Tasmanian organ and tissue donors and their families.
Many other people’s lives were transformed by the gift of restored or improved sight from 12 Tasmanian deceased eye donors.
DonateLife Tasmania had a record year in 2019, with increases in donor referrals, families providing consent for donation to proceed, and donation and transplant outcomes.
Figures in an Organ and Tissue Authority report released today show Tasmania has the highest rate of donors in Australia at 33.7 donors per million population (dpmp) compared to a national average of 21.6 dpmp.
Forty-eight per cent of Tasmanians aged 16 years and over are registered on the Australian Organ Donor Register.
We need more Tasmanians to register as donors and then talk to their families about their decision so more people can benefit from a lifesaving or life-changing transplant.
Registration is important because it leaves families in no doubt about their loved one’s decision – in Australia, families of potential donors must agree before donation can proceed.
Nine out of 10 families agree to donation when their loved one is registered on the Australian Organ Donor Register.
