Tasmanian Kangaroos AFLW team to star at North Hobart Oval

The Hodgman Liberal Government is delighted that planned infrastructure upgrades at North Hobart Oval have helped convince the AFL to schedule the Tassie Kangaroos first round AFLW match at the spiritual home of football in Southern Tasmania.

The Tasmanian Government has been a strong supporter of the North Melbourne Tassie Kangaroos with our $2.5 million five-year deal delivering half the club’s home games in Tasmania plus coaching and talent development programs to grow the sport in this state.

This funding will also help develop all-girl Auskick centres, female youth teams, talent pathways and intrastate games to help accelerate future talent identification.

Additionally we made a $300,000 election commitment to upgrade infrastructure and coaches and media facilities to allow AFLW matches to be played at North Hobart Oval.

The Premier Will Hodgman and I have also strongly lobbied the AFL for North Hobart Oval to host the first roster game next year.

AFLW is enjoying enormous growth and encouraging more girls and young women to lead a more active lifestyle and enjoy the benefits of team sport within a supportive club environment.

In recognition of this growth the Hodgman Liberal Government has also committed $10 million over two years for the Levelling the Playing Field Grant Program to help upgrade sports facilities and change rooms for women and girls.

I encourage all Tasmanians with an interest in sport to mark February 3, 2019, in your diaries and make the trip to North Hobart Oval and cheer on our AFLW Tassie Roos in this historic match.
