Southern Remand Centre project hits next milestone

The Hodgman Liberal Government will tomorrow open a tender process for a managing contractor for the new Southern Remand Centre, in what is a significant milestone for the $70 million project.

Early site works commenced this month at the Risdon Prison complex, and once complete, the Centre will house more than 140 remandees and significantly increase capacity across the entire Tasmanian Prison System.

It is expected more than 130 jobs will be created during the construction of this project with 50 jobs ongoing.

This major development will also provide better outcomes for offenders and improve conditions to ensure we optimise opportunities for rehabilitation.

Like jurisdictions across Australia, Tasmania has experienced an increase in prisoner numbers, with remandees being the fastest growing group.

The Southern Remand Centre will address these pressures and comes as part of the Hodgman Liberal Government’s $340 million election commitment to fix Tasmania’s ageing prison infrastructure.
