Record investment in affordable housing

The Tasmanian Liberal Government has a clear road map for economic and social recovery which includes the most aggressive construction program in Tasmania’s history.

Projects like affordable housing, upgrades on schools and Government buildings will be brought forward, or commenced swiftly right across State.

Boosting the supply of affordable housing, including that proposed in the Huntingfield Master Plan, is critical to not only ensure Tasmanians have safe and secure accommodation, but also to stimulate our economy and support our vital building and construction sector.

That’s why it is extremely disappointing that Labor would chose to try and divide and mislead the Kingborough community over this project when we should all be working together for the benefit of Tasmania.

Our Affordable Housing Action strategy is the biggest in Tasmania’s history and we currently have about 250 homes under construction with Community Housing Grants worth $34 million expected to deliver 300 new homes over the next few years.

The Huntingfield project aims to deliver a broad mix of around 470 residential lots, high-quality public amenities, open spaces and support infrastructure.

The proposed subdivision works would inject around $19 million into the local economy and create over 140 full-time jobs, which could benefit many businesses in Kingborough and the broader southern region. The construction of homes is expected to deliver an additional $120 million in economic activity, creating over 850 jobs.

The draft Huntingfield Master Plan is open for public comment until 26 June and I encourage all interested Tasmanians to have their say.

The Tasmanian Government is working with local government and all sectors of the construction industry to help rebuild Tasmania’s economy and create jobs – it is just a shame that Labor wants to divide the community for political gain at a time when we need to work together.
