The Hodgman Liberal Government is taking action to improve quad bike safety in Tasmania.
The series of sessions launched today will be held around the State, aimed at increasing education and awareness to ensure farmers can continue to use quad bikes as an important piece of farming equipment, in a safe manner.
The sessions, run by Safe Farming Tasmania, WorkSafe Tasmania and the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association, coincide with the start of the quad bike rebate scheme.
As of last Monday (1 July), farmers can apply and receive a rebate of up to 50 per cent for the fitting of approved rollover or crush protection devices to quad bikes.
We have funded this initiative as part of the 2019-20 State Budget, with $700,000 set aside to accommodate a package of measures to improve quad bike safety.
In addition to these safety sessions and the fitting rollover and crush protection devices, we are developing a public awareness and education campaign specifically designed to keep children safe around quad bikes.
Quad bikes are one of the leading causes of death and injury on Australian farms, with 11 quad bike related deaths in Tasmania between 2011 and 2019 to date.
