New Flashing Markers to Warn of Icy Roads

Motorists will soon have greater warning of icy conditions on the Huon Highway at Vince’s Saddle with the installation this month of new flashing road markers.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to working with the community to reduce the incidence of serious injury crashes, and this initiative is a practical measure to achieve safer roads.

Funded by the Road Safety Levy, the temperature-activated pavement markers, which flash blue to warn motorists that the road surface may be slippery, will be installed along a five-kilometre section of the highway.

This is being undertaken as a trial in Tasmania to assess their effectiveness in encouraging motorists to drive to the road conditions.

A detailed design study by the Department of State Growth identified these particular markers, currently also being trialled in New Zealand, as a cost-effective solution.

If successful, they could be an affordable initiative for more than 30 ice-prone sites across the State’s road network.

With the cold weather already upon us, motorists are urged to drive to road conditions and take heed of warnings – such as these new flashing blue markers.
