More cloud seeding under Energy Supply Plan

Through our Energy Supply Plan the Government is doing everything necessary to maintain energy security.

While the major component of our Plan is to bring on additional generation to meet Tasmania’s energy needs, the Plan also includes other elements, such as cloud seeding.

Hydro Tasmania has been cloud seeding in the State since 1964 and has significant expertise in the area.

Hydro Tasmania generally commences cloud seeding in May, but has brought the start date forward this year as part of the Energy Supply Plan.  Historical data shows that there is a good chance of being able to undertake cloud seeding activity throughout April.

Last Saturday, Hydro Tasmania completed its first successful cloud seeding flight of the year over the Lakes Gordon, Pedder, St Clair and King William catchments.  A further successful flight was undertaken on Tuesday over Lake Gordon.

Because of the record dry conditions, Hydro Tasmania will also look to undertake cloud seeding over agricultural catchments as well when conditions allow.

Cloud seeding is just one part of our Energy Supply Plan.

Over the past few weeks:

  • the Trent unit at the Tamar Valley Power Station was brought back online ahead of schedule and is now contributing at full capacity;
  • over 100MW of diesel generators have been installed and are progressively coming online;
  • a further 100MW of temporary generation has been sourced and will be installed during April; and
  • the Basslink fault has been identified, with repairs to commence next week.

Tasmanians can be assured we will do everything necessary to maintain energy security.
