Measures in place for council meetings

The Tasmanian Government has today formalised arrangements for local councils to meet remotely during the COVID-19 emergency.

Local Government plays a crucial role in keeping our economy moving and providing essential services to our local communities.

The Tasmanian Government has been working closely with the local government sector to enable councils to meet physical distancing requirements while still enabling elected members and staff to meet and fulfil their statutory requirements.

The notices, which come into force from today, address these issues by:

• allowing for councils to meet via teleconference and videoconference;
• ensuring that councils can authorise and sign certain documents electronically; and
• allowing for documents that would ordinarily need to be available at council offices in hard copy to instead be accessible online.

Councils will also need to make an electronic recording of meetings available on their websites for the community to view.

The Tasmanian Government is pleased to support councils to do their important work during these challenging times.
