Tasmanian company CPT Engineering have been awarded the tender to construct a new lookout and elevated walkways within Freycinet National Park overlooking Wineglass Bay.
The $700,000 project is jointly funded through the Tasmanian Government’s Improving Statewide Visitor Infrastructure program and the Federal Government’s National Tourism Icons Package.
Tasmanian Minister for Environment and Parks Roger Jaensch said the project would support jobs and the regional economy on the East Coast while reducing congestion in peak times at the ever-popular Wineglass Bay.
“The new lookout and elevated walkways have been carefully designed to blend into the landscape and improve the visitor experience,” Minister Jaensch said.
“The project will also be supported by two other Tasmanian companies, with stone work undertaken by stonemason John Hughes and lifting services provided by Tasmanian Helicopters.
“Wineglass Bay is one of the most iconic destinations in Tasmania. The lookout showcases the amazing scenery, and the upgrades will ease congestion issues and ensure the area can be enjoyed by Tasmanians and visitors for years to come.”
Federal Assistant Minister for Regional Tourism Jonno Duniam said the project would preserve and enhance the world-class tourism destination.
“This project will improve the visitor experience for anyone visiting Wineglass Bay, and it will encourage Tasmanians to get out and explore their backyard,” Assistant Minister Duniam said.
The final design of the second Wineglass Bay lookout took into account public feedback on the project as part of the Reserve Activity Assessment (RAA) earlier this year.
The new lookout was identified as a priority in the Freycinet Peninsula Master Plan 2019. Other initiatives include a new visitor gateway, improved wastewater and a network of transport connections.
Work on the new lookout has already commenced with the installation of stonework. The project is expected to be completed in December 2020.
