Investing in our parks and reserves

Priority building maintenance projects in our national parks and reserves are supporting jobs and the economy in our regional areas as we continue to recover from COVID-19.

The projects form part of the Government’s $70 million stimulus program for the maintenance of public assets, with priority projects identified as ‘screwdriver ready’ and already underway.

These include:

  • $450k for priority road maintenance works - statewide;
  • $200k for maintenance works at Hastings Caves State Reserve;
  • $250k for general maintenance and renovation of the Ranger Station and Field Centre at Cradle Mountain;
  • $150k for heritage maintenance works at the Shot Tower at Taroona;
  • $100K on track works on a second Wineglass Bay lookout at Freycinet;
  • $150K to heritage maintenance works at the Richmond Gaol; and
  • $150K split across each of the 3 regions for statewide priority signage replacement works.

Every year our national parks and reserves make a huge contribution to the Tasmanian economy, particularly in regional areas, and these projects are working to support jobs in our building and construction sectors, particularly in regional Tasmania.

It’s in addition to significant upgrades to parks visitor infrastructure across Tasmania committed to by the Government with the largest ever investment in our national parks and reserves - in excess of $80 million over a four year period.

The Government has instructed that, wherever possible, those investments should be brought forward to act as an additional stimulus for the economy at a time when Tasmania needs it most.
