Government welcomes conditional re-opening of 24-hour gyms

The strengthening of COVID-Safe protocols in gyms to enable 24/7 operations will be welcomed by the fitness industry and gym patrons.

We know from public health advice and evidence from other jurisdictions that gyms can be at higher risk of COVID-19 transmission, and that is why it is so important to have appropriate and consistent protocols in place to enable gym patrons a safe fitness environment.

With COVID-Safe plans now agreed, with a focus on density, physical distancing, contact tracing, cleaning and hygiene arrangements, gyms will be permitted to open without supervision from next Thursday 17 September.

I acknowledge this will be a relief to many Tasmanians who have been unable to use their memberships out of hours during this time, and I am pleased the new protocols have been agreed by Public Health and Worksafe Tasmania following discussions with the fitness industry.

I urge gym operators and their patrons to comply with the operating protocols that have today been circulated to the fitness industry.

It takes all Tasmanians to keep our state safe, and I remind Tasmanians to please exercise good hygiene, practice physical distancing, stay home if you’re unwell and get a test, even if you have mild symptoms.
