Congratulations to the Tasmanian Tigers Women’s cricket team, who under the guidance of coach Salliann Briggs have won three of its four Women’s National Cricket League one day matches this season.
The Hodgman Liberal Government wants Tasmanian women to have a clear pathway to excel in professional sport in their home state, and our home grown champions to play for Tasmania.
Women’s sport is on the crest of a wave and the Tasmanian Government is investing to secure more sporting opportunities for our women and girls.
The Tasmanian Government is a strong supporter of women in cricket, which is why we have increased funding from $560,000 to $800,000 to Cricket Tasmania in recognition of the fact they are now running high performance men’s and women’s programs, and we are delighted to see the Tasmanian Tigers Women’s team hours of hard work and training being rewarded.
On top of this, we’re also investing $200,000 in 2018-19 to support additional BBL/WBBL games in Launceston and on the North West Coast, to help drive increased interest in the sport.
Sport is part of the Tasmanian way of life and we want to see it continue to grow. Encouragingly there has been a 26 per cent increase in female participation in cricket on 2017 year on year figures, however we also know facilities across the State are often not up to standard for female participants.
That’s why we have our Levelling the Playing Field Grants Program. By partnering and leveraging our investment with sporting clubs, organisations as well as local government, up to $20 million worth of upgrades and new facilities for women’s sport will be delivered across Tasmania.
