The Hodgman Liberal Government is the strongest supporter of the Flinders Island community with the unveiling today of the completed GeoTrail project that will highlight interesting geological features for locals and visitors alike.
The Furneaux Islands have a rich and diverse range of geological features spanning hundreds of millions of years and the GeoTrail links 10 significant sites with interpretive signs and the use of modern technology with a specially developed mobile web app.
People can use their smart phones to click onto the QR code on each sign to explore and understand more about the unique landscape in which they find themselves.
The Hodgman Liberal Government kick-started the project with a $10,000 grant which was further supplemented with a successful application to Tasmania Community Fund and support from the Flinders Council and local community.
The GeoTrail will provide a great educational resource and an additional activity for visitors as they tour the island and look for eco-tourism experiences.
We congratulate everyone involved with this initiative and particularly the GeoTrail project team which consisted of Wayne Dick (Ranger in charge of Furneaux Island with Tasmania Parks and Wildlife), Michael Vickery (Senior Geologist at the Department of State Growth), David Williams (Flinders Council Deputy Mayor), Bron Grutzner (President of the Furneaux Historical Research Association) and especially the project's visionary Dr Dale Williams (Project Manager and FHRA volunteer).
