The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is committed to supporting businesses and growing the economy, and the start of construction at Oatland’s Callington Mill and Distillery is an exciting example of what you can do in Tasmania.
Parliamentary Secretary for Regional and Community Development Jane Howlett MLC said the development was a prime example of a business being built around Tasmania’s iconic brand.
“Callington Mill showcases Tasmania’s colonial past in these unique Georgian buildings, which includes the oldest working Lincolnshire Windmill Mill in the Southern Hemisphere,” Ms Howlett said.
“Tapping into Tasmania’s world-class brand of high-quality products, the Distillery development will be a significant drawcard for the Oatlands area.”
Ms Howlett said the substantial private investment of $25-$30 million in the Distillery development reflects Tasmania’s strong economy.
“This week, the NAB Business Survey showed that Tasmanian businesses continue to be the most confident in the country, which is a further endorsement of the Hodgman majority Liberal Government’s plan,” Ms Howlett said.
“And it’s thanks to businesses like Callington Mill Pty Ltd that put money into the economy and create jobs for local people, which contribute to Tasmania’s economy being the fastest growing in the nation.”
Callington Mill Distillery owner and developer John Ibrahim said they have designed a building that respects the heritage significance of the Mill Complex and aligns with the colonial character of Oatlands.
“Our vision is to make Callington Mill a worldwide brand, and believe this Distillery will strengthen the region’s status as a single-malt producer,” Mr Ibrahim said.
“The building will house a 100 per cent Tasmanian-made automated turnkey whiskey distillery as well as a world-class Visitor Centre and tourist experience.”
Southern Midlands Council Mayor Alex Green said it is anticipated there will be significant flow-on effects for surrounding businesses in the region.
“This presents a transformative opportunity for Oatlands, one that is greatly valued and appreciated,” Mayor Green said.
“For a start, direct employment is expected to increase from the 16 current jobs to around 40 after construction.
“And indirectly, other opportunities will arise through increased visitation to Oatlands and subsequent business investment.
“I sincerely thank Callington Mill Pty Ltd for being prepared to invest in Oatlands and as part of this development we look forward to the rejuvenation of the Callington Mill precinct.”
