Tenders are now open for the Midway Point Intersection Solution, which is the next exciting step in the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s South East Traffic Solution.
We are now on the road to recovery, and this is one of our key infrastructure projects, to stimulate the economy, keep Tasmanians in work, and make our roads safer.
It is one of the projects in our massive $1.8 billion job-creating infrastructure investment program across the state, which has an estimated construction value of $3.1 billion.
The Midway Point roundabout is currently operating near capacity, and this project will replace it with traffic signals, improving the flow of traffic through Midway Point.
The Tasman Highway will also be increased to two lanes in each direction and Penna Road will be realigned.
This project will make it quicker for traffic to move through the intersection and provide safe access to the highway from Midway Point.
The tender process will be open to all pre-qualified contractors, with tenders closing on August 26.
Construction is expected to begin later this year.
The South East Traffic Solution is jointly funded by the Tasmanian and Australian Governments as part of the Roads of Strategic Importance funding commitment. It consists of a suite of improvements on the Tasman Highway between the Hobart Airport and Sorell, and on the Arthur Highway, south of Iron Creek Bridge.
This package of works is progressing well and will benefit Tasmanians for generations. Construction of the first South East Traffic Solution project, the Arthur Highway overtaking lane, was completed in February, and early site preparation works are now underway at the Hobart Airport Interchange.
