STRENGTHENING OUR FUTURE: DELIVERING FOR ALL TASMANIANS IN THE NORTH

The 2022-23 State Budget is strengthening Tasmania’s future right across the State as we deliver for all Tasmanians.

Tasmanians’ priorities are our priorities, which is why are continuing to deliver our record infrastructure program, harness our competitive advantages and create more opportunities for Tasmanians to maintain a robust economy so that we can invest where it matters most.

For the North, we are investing in the essential areas Tasmanians care about, including health and mental health, education, infrastructure, helping our most vulnerable, and keeping our communities safe.

Significant investments in the North include:

Health and mental health:

  • $50 million towards the $580 million LGH Stage 2 Redevelopment, including the mental health precinct;
  • $38.24 million towards the $87 million LGH Stage 1 Redevelopment;
  • $2.5 million to improve the Respiratory Unit capacity at the LGH;
  • $9 million towards the $10 million Acute Care Facility at Kings Meadows Community Centre; and
  • $7 million for operational funding for additional Paramedic Crews at Launceston.

Education:

  • $6.95 million towards upgrading outdated classrooms statewide, including Mowbray Heights Primary, Glen Dhu Primary, Lilydale District School, Ringarooma Primary School, South George Town Primary and Port Dalrymple Primary School;
  • $15 million for the Tasmanian Agricultural Precinct for research, skills and development of industry;
  • $10.9 million towards the Exeter High School redevelopment;
  • $21.9 million towards the construction of the new Legana Primary School; and
  • $23.8 million towards six new Child and Family Learnings Centres, including East Tamar.

Helping our most vulnerable:

  • $6.9 million to continue to provide Safe Spaces, including $1.9 million for Launceston; and
  • $15 million towards the construction of two new supported accommodation facilities for older Tasmanians in the North and North-West.

Infrastructure:

  • $59.9 million as part of the $75 million Launceston and Tamar Valley Traffic Vision including improvements to Invermay junctions, upgrades to the Batman Highway, Frankford Road and Birralee Road and planning for a new Tamar River crossing;
  • $100 million for upgrades to the East and West Tamar Highways;
  • $80 million for upgrades to Illawarra Road, linking the Bass Highway with the Midland Highway;
  • An initial $3.5 million for the $25 million upgrades for the Devonport to Cradle Mountain road upgrades;
  • $58.6 million for the Cradle Mountain Experience; and
  • $400,000 to complete the Bracknell Hall replacement.

Keeping our community safe:

  • $7 million to complete the refurbishment of the Launceston Police Station;
  • $3.25 million for new and upgraded Police Housing statewide, including in Derby, Liawenee, and Fingal; and
  • $90.7 million towards the construction of the new $270 million Northern Correctional Facility

Investing in the North East:

  • $70 million towards the $120 million project to improve the Sideling section of the Tasman Highway between Scottsdale and Launceston;
  • $1.9 million towards the contemporary Management Plan for the Ben Lomond National Park focusing on year-round activities;
  • $465,000 for upgrades to infrastructure in North-East Parks and Reserves; and
  • $650,000 for the Victoria Street redevelopment in Scottsdale.

Investing in Flinders Island

  • $1.3 million to support full-time Biosecurity officers on King and Flinders Island and to construct purpose-built wash down facilities;
  • $825,000 for the Flinders Island camping ground upgrades and RV access;
  • Further funding to complete the $2 million upgrade of Palana Road; and
  • $1 million for underwriting of regular passenger flights between Hobart and Flinders Island and King Island.

The 2022-23 State Budget is delivering for all Tasmanians, including in the North, and we will continue to do all we can to strengthen Tasmania’s future and ensure our regions can thrive into the future.
