INVESTING IN OUR SUSTAINABLE PRIMARY INDUSTRIES

The Tasmanian Liberal Government recognises that our sustainable primary industries drive growth and jobs in our regional communities, and are important pillars of our economy, which is why we are announcing further investments across agriculture, water, and fisheries.

The 2022-23 State Budget is strengthening Tasmania’s future by building on our existing commitments and delivering even more initiatives to support our farmers and fishers to take our sustainable primary industries to the next level.

The Budget announcements include:

  • $377,000 toward the development of a new 10-year Salmon Plan allowing industry and the community to identify new long-term actions that support a vision for a sustainable industry, which continues to support Tasmanian jobs, businesses and, communities;
  • $400,000 for the ShellMAP Industry Market Access Program to continue to enhance Tasmania’s reputation for quality seafood and create stronger regional economies;
  • $1.9 million over four years to resource the implementation of the Wild Fallow Deer Management Plan, including support for existing deer farmers to market and showcase their products; and
  • $535,000 from the Tasmanian Government for the National Water Grid Authority Science Program to support the Tasmanian Rural Water Use Strategy to encourage the environmentally conscious, sustainable use of water and promote new opportunities for innovation and growth. This investment will complement Australian Government funding, taking the total joint funding to more than $1.8 million.

We are already delivering a range of initiatives to help improve our strong biosecurity systems, support innovation across industries, protect our river health, and support sustainable development.

We are backing these in with our previous investments, including:

  • Supersizing our irrigation schemes to meet increased demand for the Don, Tamar, Sassafras and Wesley Vale, and Northern Midlands irrigation schemes;
  • Creating the River Health Advisory Project and implementing initiatives identified in the Rural Water Use Strategy, with a particular focus on river health, monitoring and metering;
  • Strengthening our borders and protecting Tasmania from biosecurity risks by delivering additional Biosecurity staff and facilities on Bass Strait Islands, as well as partnerships with the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association and Fruit Growers Tasmania to deliver better on farm biosecurity;
  • Establishing state-of-the-art research facilities at the national leading Tasmanian Agricultural Precinct at Newnham;
  • Implementing the Strategic Industry Partnership Program and the Agricultural Development Fund to support agricultural innovation and research, development, and extension;
  • Upgrading our State-owned agricultural research farms;
  • Supporting farming families and rural communities through the Future Drought Fund, Rural Youth, and Women in Agriculture programs;
  • Supporting the wild fisheries sector to make boat improvements and adopt new technologies, re-skill and upskill workers, value-add and diversify, and develop markets and supply chains;
  • Supporting emerging industries and the development of Aboriginal cultural fisheries;
  • Supporting the East Coast Rock Lobster Translocation Program;
  • Implementing the State’s first ever 10-Year Recreational Sea Fishing Strategy, and

We are passionate about supporting Tasmanian businesses, families and communities, and providing the platform to help build a bright future for Tasmania.

The sustainable development of our agriculture, fisheries and water resources provides greater opportunities for growth and jobs and helps to deliver the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s plan for all Tasmanians.
