DELIVERING TASMANIA’S CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION PLAN

Roger Jaensch MP, Minister for Environment and Climate Change

Tasmania is a global leader in taking action against climate change, having achieved net zero emissions in six of the past seven years.

But we know there is more to be done to reduce emissions and capture the opportunities that combating climate change brings, for our environment, investment, brand and jobs.

The Tasmanian Government is investing almost $10 million over four years to deliver our next Climate Change Action Plan, which will include actions to reduce emissions and adapt, and boost resilience, to the changing climate. Critically, the Action Plan will also support investment in a low emissions economy through Emissions Reduction and Resilience Plans, to be developed in partnership with key sectors and industries.

The 2022-23 Budget will strengthen Tasmania’s future by supporting our ambitious target of net-zero emissions from 2030, which will not only demonstrate leadership but also drive economic growth and diversify our economy with new industries and opportunities.

We are continuing to lead by example when it comes to reducing emissions by increasing our investment to transition the Government fleet to electric vehicles by 2030 to $4.6 million. This will reduce our dependence on imported fuels, reduce emissions and deliver more affordable electric vehicles into the Tasmanian market, sooner.

We will invest $10 million over four years to replace Tasmania’s ageing fleet of fossil fuel boilers in schools, hospitals and correctional facilities. And we will continue to invest in our Renewable Schools Fund, which will see solar panels installed at every Government school where it is practical to do so.

To support Tasmanians who want to make the switch to an electric vehicle, our Government will continue to waive stamp duty charges for electric vehicles purchased in 2022-23 and provide a $30 million Tasmanian Energy Efficiency No-Interest Loan Scheme to support Tasmanian households with energy efficiency upgrades.

The 2022-23 Budget continues to strengthen Tasmania’s future by delivering significant investment to double renewable energy generation by 2040, which is critical to further reducing emissions and attracting new investment and jobs in sectors such as green hydrogen production and use.
