The Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering a record $8 billion into education, skills and training to ensure our children and young people have every opportunity to pursue their ambitions, regardless of their background or circumstance.

The 2021-22 Tasmanian Budget includes a record investment into additional quality teaching coaches, professional support staff, school health nurses and support for students impacted by trauma, while continuing to invest heavily in education infrastructure.

To support our plan in education, this Budget includes:

  • $5.3 million to increase the number of additional in school quality literacy coaches to 40 commencing in 2022. This represents a 50 per cent increase in the number of in school quality literacy coaches;
  • $8 million over four years in additional funding for intensive trauma support, which will take our total investment to $22 million and support an extra 100 students every year. This includes $2 million for professional development for school leaders and teachers to ensure staff have the knowledge to support students impacted by trauma;
  • $4.7 million over four years to deliver senior secondary assessments and exams using technology and online platforms to start building or licensing a secure, reliable, fit for purpose online assessment platform;
  • $3.8 million to replicate the Support and Wellbeing team model currently in government schools in our Child and Family Learning Centres to ensure free access to speech and language pathologists, psychologists and social workers;
  • $1 million over four years to extend the very successful 24 Carrot Gardens program from fifteen schools to an additional three secondary schools in the South and two primary schools in the North West;
  • $750,000 to continue the Stay ChatTY in Schools program to support student mental health;
  • $5.4 million over four years to employ an additional 11.4 full time Grade 4 nurses, and 3 full time Grade 6 Clinical Nurse Educators to assist students and further support health prevention and early intervention initiatives; and
  • $56 million over four years for Education Adjustments to support students with disability across Tasmanian Government schools.

In addition, the Budget is delivering our record investment into education infrastructure with new infrastructure commitments of $116.2 million.

This will allow investment in co-education high school facilities in Hobart, a support school package including a new North West support school, upgrades to contemporary classrooms and a renewable energy schools program.

In combination with other infrastructure projects, this additional investment takes the total Capital Investment Program over four years to $271.8 million.

In addition, the Government is investing $135.5 million in the skills and training our industries need and to help young Tasmanians get a job.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government has a plan to secure the future for Tasmanian students, and we are delivering on that through the 2021-22 Tasmanian Budget demonstrated by our record investment.
