2019-20 Budget: Extra Inspectors to improve workplace safety

This year’s State Budget is focused on maintaining the momentum and investing for growth, with additional investment committed to the Worksafe Tasmania Inspectorate to employ up to five extra workplace inspectors.

With a growing workforce and business sector, the Hodgman Liberal Government wants to ensure we are investing in the health and wellbeing of our workers into the future.

A strong WorkSafe inspectorate plays a crucial role in ensuring that workplaces comply with their work health and safety duties, and ensuring all Tasmanians are able to return home from work safely each day.

Funding of $600,000 per annum will go towards this commitment.

This will allow Worksafe to increase the size of its inspectorate to meet the unprecedented levels of capital investment by business and Government around the State, which is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.

The additional inspectorate resources will enable the department to better engage with industry to:

  • provide information and advice regarding  compliance with work health and safety laws;
  • assist in the resolution of work health and safety issues;
  • review disputed provisional improvement notices;
  • investigate compliance breaches and workplace incidents; and
  • prosecute offences.

This investment will enable the Inspectorate to deliver better inspection and investigation outcomes for the Tasmanian community.
