SUPPORTING TASMANIA’S UNIQUE HERITAGE ASSETS

MADELEINE OGILVIE MP, Minister for Heritage

The Rockliff Liberal Government will further strengthen the rich cultural heritage of our State, with an extra $4.5 million in funding over three years.

In addition to an allocation for the National Trust in 2023-24 to support essential maintenance, the 2023-34 Tasmanian Budget will provide funding for a small grants program of up to $20,000 to support conservation works on State Heritage-listed properties and also a built heritage activation program, with grants of up to $200,000.

Minister for Heritage, Madeleine Ogilvie, said this Budget ensures targeted, careful, and considered investment in the heritage sector.

“This initiative will support Tasmania’s iconic built heritage assets and their important contribution to our economy, and the Tasmanian brand, in driving visitation to the State and setting us apart from other tourism destinations,” she said.

“As the largest single owner and caretaker, public or private, of listed heritage assets in the State, the Tasmanian Government wants to ensure we continue telling our unique Tasmanian stories and supporting our heritage sector more broadly for generations to come.

“Tasmania has some of the best post-colonial built heritage in the world, owing to its unique convict, pioneering and pastoral history, with more than 5000 national and state heritage-listed buildings and places in Tasmania, and many more recognised by local government and communities.”

The Government’s recently released report, Back to the Future: Situational Analysis of the Historical Heritage Ecosystem in Tasmania has highlighted key opportunities for the sector and will serve as a foundation for identifying opportunities to preserve and showcase the State’s heritage assets.
