SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT INTO TASMANIA’S ADVANCED MANUFACTURING AND DEFENCE INDUSTRIES

MADELEINE OGILVIE MP, Minister for Advanced Manufacturing and Defence Industries

Tasmania will play an even bigger role in supporting Australia’s defence efforts, with millions of dollars to flow to our local innovative defence sector from 2023-24 Tasmanian Budget.

The Rockliff Liberal Government is investing to grow the capability of our important advanced manufacturing and defence industries.

Minister for Advanced Manufacturing and Defence Industries, Madeleine Ogilvie, said it is a sector that continues to grow in strength and reputation.

“That is why we have committed $5 million to North-West manufacturer Elphinstone to support its building expansion for the LAND 8116 Protected Mobile Fires project and should they be successful in the multi-billion-dollar LAND 400 project, which is aimed at procuring next-generation infantry fighting vehicles.

“We know the recently released Defence Strategic Review will provide opportunities and we want our local companies to be able to be competitive and showcase their innovation, capacity and excellence.

“This Budget invests $2.75 million into our Tasmanian Defence Industry Strategy 2023 over the forward estimates to allow Tasmanian businesses to continue to grow their presence in the national and international defence supply chains and contribute to the Australia’s sovereign defence priorities.

“Tasmania has some of the most innovative companies in the world, their excellence and craftsmanship is second to none. This Budget builds on the confidence that exists in our important industries and strengthens our economy to enable continued jobs growth.”

Tasmania’s manufacturing is a key industry for our State, employing more than 19,000 people and generating more than $2 billion.
