INVESTING IN SALMON AND FLATHEAD FOR THE FUTURE

JO PALMER MLC, Minister for Primary Industries and Water

The Rockliff Liberal Government recognises the significant contribution the salmon industry and State’s fisheries have on Tasmania’s economy, supporting regional jobs and communities.

The 2023-24 Tasmanian Budget is building a strong, safe and secure future for Tasmanians.

Primary Industries and Water Minister Jo Palmer said the Government was investing $850,000 over three years to implement key initiatives outlined in the Tasmanian Salmon Industry Plan 2023.

“Released on May 1, the Salmon Plan provides an enduring strategic framework that identifies long-term priorities for the industry and supports businesses and the community,” Minister Palmer said.

“The vision of the Plan will be delivered through four priority outcomes which focus on sustainable industry, healthy ecosystems, prosperous communities, and contemporary governance.”

This Budget ensures targeted, careful and considered investment which includes funding to ensure the viability of the recreational fishery for generations to come.

The Rockliff Liberal Government has committed $1 million over two years for a flathead recovery program.

“The initiative will support the urgent action required to support the recovery of sand flathead stock which is currently listed as depleted,” Minister Palmer said.

“This will include research initiatives in partnership with the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies and targeted fisher education programs in partnership with TARfish.

“I want to ensure Tasmanians can continue fishing this popular species for generations to come and that is why we are making targeted investments into the recovery of our fishery.”

Sand flathead is the most popular recreational fish in Tasmania, accounting for 70 per cent of all recreational fish taken from state waters.

The Rockliff Liberal Government is targeting every dollar in this Budget to get things done building a strong economy and a safe, caring community.
