EMBEDDING GENDER QUALITY INTO ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE

JO PALMER MLC, Minister for Women

The Rockliff Liberal Government continues to work towards achieving gender equality in Tasmania, including through the full participation of women and girls in society, with targeted and considered investment.

As part of the 2023-24 Tasmanian Budget, Minister for Women, Jo Palmer, has joined with Treasurer Michael Ferguson to deliver the Rockliff Liberal Government’s second Gender Budget Snapshot.

This Snapshot provides a blueprint to analyse the impacts of our investments across the areas of economic security, health and wellbeing, and opportunities created for Tasmanian women,” Minister Palmer said.

“This Government is building a safe, caring community and understanding our impacts is a key element of embedding gender equality in the culture, attitudes, and practices of Tasmanians.

“We are also partnering with the University of Tasmania to develop an evaluation framework to further understand the impacts of our investments on the lives of Tasmanian women.”

This body of work was a key initiative under Equal Means Equal: The Tasmanian Women’s Strategy 2022-2027, which was released in December 2022.

“This important Strategy presents a whole-of-government approach to address the cultural, structural, and economic barriers preventing gender equality in Tasmania,” Minister Palmer said.

“Our Government committed $800,000 over four years in 2022-23 to implement strategy and this year’s carefully considered Budget continues to support those key initiatives.”

This commitment was in addition to the significant investments made to support women’s economic participation, including:

  • $350,000 to 2024-25 to boost attraction, recruitment, and retention of women in non-traditional fields through the Supporting Women to Succeed Grants Program;
  • $300,000 over four years for the Women’s Leadership Scholarship Program;
  • $75,000 to develop a Women in Building and Construction Strategy in partnership with Keystone Tasmania;
  • $150,000 to support the Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing and Energy Council Diversity Action Plan; and
  • $300,000 to support the Tasmanian Forest and Forest Products Network Diversity Action Plan.

The Rockliff Liberal Government is building a safe, caring community through our investment in the extension of the Women’s Stories Project.

Minister Palmer said the project celebrated extraordinary Tasmanian women by sharing the stories of women who lead, women in their communities, and women supporting other women.

“This work champions the meaningful achievements of Tasmanian women and showcases the influence of our unusual place and our unexpected lifestyles,” Minister Palmer said.
