DELIVERING THE EDUCATION FACILITIES TASMANIAN LEARNERS DESERVE

ROGER JAENSCH MP, Minister for Education, Children and Youth

The Rockliff Liberal Government’s 2023-24 Budget is building the future for Tasmanian students through its significant investment in contemporary learning facilities.

Education, Children and Youth Minister Roger Jaensch said the 2023-24 Tasmanian Budget includes $254.9 million for education infrastructure to be delivered by the Department for Education, Children and Young People over the Budget and Forward Estimates, including $105.8 million in 2023–24.

“This funding includes exciting new school builds at Legana and Brighton, which are both underway, along with major redevelopments of the North-West Support School, Sorell School, Hobart City High School, Cambridge Primary School, Exeter High School, Lauderdale Primary School, Montello Primary School and Cosgrove High School,” Minister Jaensch said.

“Our responsible Budget management has ensured we can continue to deliver our record infrastructure program for schools.

“The Government’s investment in education infrastructure supports our plan to provide students with contemporary learning spaces while also strengthening our economy and creating jobs.”

The Rockliff Liberal Government’s $10 million Contemporary Classrooms program is progressing well, with the highest priority schools benefiting from larger, modern learning spaces that provide greater functionality and flexibility for schools.

“Upgrades at Campbell Town District School, Dodges Ferry Primary School, Havenview Primary School, East Derwent Primary School, Lilydale District School and Risdon Vale Primary School are expected to be completed in the 2023 calendar year, with South George Town Primary School upgrades scheduled for completion in early 2024,” Minister Jaensch said.

“The second tranche of schools receiving upgrades are Ringarooma Primary School, Glen Dhu Primary School, Rosetta Primary School, Mowbray Heights Primary School and Port Dalrymple District School. These upgrades are in various stages of planning and are expected to be completed next year.”

This Government continues to deliver on its $28 million program to build six new Child and Family Learning Centres, with new centres at East Tamar, Waratah Wynyard, Glenorchy, Kingborough, Sorell and West Ulverstone.

“The new East Tamar centre is open, and construction is well underway on the Waratah Wynyard and West Ulverstone centres,” Minister Jaensch said.

“Construction has also commenced on the Sorell, Kingborough and Glenorchy centres with their completion expected in 2024.

“Once complete, we will have 18 centres supporting our youngest learners and their families across Tasmania.”

In addition to these projects, our careful and considered Budget is progressing other important upgrades to education facilities through:

  • $10 million Outdoor Learning program, which is supporting 145 individual projects;
  • $8 million to upgrade electrical switchboards in schools;
  • Upgrading 42 high school and district school student bathrooms to improve safety with a $6.3 Million investment;
  • Providing solar panels in more than 100 schools though the $5 million Renewable Energy Schools program;
  • Supporting the development of facilities for Agriculture in schools at Bothwell District School ($2 million) and Campbelltown District School ($2 million); and
  • Other upgrades to other school assets and facilities that add to the life of the school and the options available to students, like upgraded school ovals at Mt Nelson and Woodbridge schools.
