Time running out for Wicked Campers

I am very pleased to announce our legislation to ban offensive Campervans such as those operated by Wicked Campers has now passed both houses of Parliament.

The legislation will allow vehicles to be deregistered if they are found to not meet advertising standards, and where the owner has not rectified the cause.

Some of the offensive slogans on these vans are completely unacceptable and offensive and clearly promote negative attitudes to women.

There is no ability for parents to prevent their children from seeing the slogans, and it is clear that action needed to be taken to ensure they are no longer allowed on Tasmanian roads.

Any person that sees a camper they believe is offensive will be able to make a complaint to the Advertising Standards Board and if that complaint is upheld against the advertising code, then the Registrar of Motor Vehicles will be able to cancel the registration of the vehicle.

This is strong action and sends the appropriate message to Wicked Campers, or any other company who believes they can display disgusting signage on our roads, that it will not be tolerated in Tasmania.
