The Tasmanian Liberal Government is working hard to ensure all learner drivers have the support they need to obtain their driver's licence.
Three new vehicles with an ANCAP five-star safety rating have been presented to the Circular Head Aboriginal Centre and the Devonport Chaplaincy for their Learner Driver Mentor Programs.
LDMPs assist learner drivers without access to a suitable vehicle and/or supervisory driver to get the on-road driving supervision and experience needed to achieve a provisional licence by matching them with a volunteer mentor.
Learners in these programs have no other options to gain the on-road hours required to get their provisional licence.
Getting a licence opens opportunities for people to access employment, education, and services and LDMPs are supporting disadvantaged Tasmanians to do this.
With the support of Motors Tasmania we have provided two new Hyundai i30s for Devonport Chaplaincy’s ‘Easy Ps’ program and one for Circular Head Aboriginal Corporation’s ‘Strive to Drive’ program.
These ANCAP 5-star rated cars will replace the aging ones that each organisation has been using and that have had a lot of time on the road helping lots of people.
This will increase vehicle fleet safety and ensure our learners and mentors are as safe as they can be.
These new vehicles and the LDMP are part of our commitment through the Tasmania Road Safety Strategy 2017-2026 (Towards Zero Strategy) to reducing road-related trauma.
By providing programs like this, with safer vehicles we are supporting learners and their mentors to be safe as they learn to drive, and we’re helping more people grab hold of more opportunities in life by getting a driver’s licence.
The LDMP program is just one of multiple initiatives by the Tasmanian Liberal Government to assist novice drivers by making it more convenient, easier – yet safer – to gain their licence.
