Mental Health Peer Workforce Coordinator appointed

The Tasmanian Government is working hard to ensure Tasmanians experiencing mental health challenges receive the support they need, in the right place, at the right time.

As part of our First 100 Day Plan, we have appointed a Mental Health Peer Workforce Coordinator.

This is in line with our commitment of $1.9 million over three years to deliver a Peer Workforce Coordinator and establish a Youth Peer Worker model.

The appointment is a joint initiative between the Tasmanian Department of Health and Primary Health Tasmania, reflecting the importance of our ongoing collaboration to create an integrated mental health system.

The Mental Health Peer Workforce Coordinator will be based at the Mental Health Council of Tasmania, which will facilitate effective links with community managed mental health services.

The appointment of the Mental Health Peer Workforce Coordinator is an important step in supporting and growing Tasmania’s peer workforce.

The appointed Coordinator will work to implement actions under the Peer Workforce Development Strategy, and establish Tasmania’s Youth Peer Worker model.

Peer workers, with their personal lived experiences, hold an important level of knowledge and understanding as they provide advice and hope to both consumers and carers on their own mental health journeys.

Peer workers assist in breaking down stigma, and provide a person-centred focus on service and system improvements.

This model will enable Tasmanians living with mental health challenges to be supported by someone who has recovered from their own experience.
