East Coast communities showed enormous resilience during the recent closure of the Tasman Highway.
The road was closed for several weeks while work was completed to remove high risk rocks next to the road.
The Tasmanian Government plans to thank the communities of the South East Coast, as well as those involved with the project, for their patience and understanding with a community party at Our Park in Orford on Sunday, 22 August 2021, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
The Government recognises the disruption to many activities including schooling, medical appointments and local businesses caused by the need to close the main link to the East Coast.
We greatly appreciate the way people showed their resolve during the six weeks the road was closed and now, with the rocks removed and the highway back to normal, it’s time for us to say thank you.
The event will feature live music, food, speeches of thanks, and a video documenting the rock removal project. East Coast suppliers will be engaged where possible to provide a boost to local businesses.
While this is a free community event, attendance is limited to the communities of the south east coast and those who worked on the project.
People will need to register their attendance to make sure the event is COVID safe and adheres to capacity limits. Registrations can be made online via transport.tas.gov.au/orford
This will be a chance to celebrate the East Coast, and the end of this major project. It will also complement a big weekend for the East Coast, with the Festival of Voices “A Night at Bushland Gardens”, one of Tasmania’s premier events, to be held at Bushland Gardens in Buckland on Saturday, 21 August.
