Investing in the future of the racing industry

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering on its commitment to deliver improved training for apprentice jockeys and other racing industry career opportunities.

As part of our first 100 day Plan, we have started planning for apprentice training opportunities and mandatory training packages linked to licences for the racing industry. We are also expanding education options with a view for TasTAFE to support animal welfare training as well as mandatory drug and alcohol training for the racing industry.

Racing is a critical industry for Tasmania, generating more than $103 million a year in economic activity in the State, particularly benefiting rural and regional areas.

At the same time, the Tasmanian Liberal Government is taking action to build a stronger TasTAFE, which is fit for purpose, industry-specific and offers training matched to the outcomes required.

This identified need for training of apprentice jockeys, harness drivers and other racing industry jobs is a demonstration of the need for a flexible, more responsive TAFE that will address skills shortages for the future.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government will continue to support the racing industry in this State.
