Since its launch in 2015, the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s Free Wi-Fi Network has been a successful boost for our tourism industry, helping visitors create and share their uniquely Tasmanian experience with friends and family.
As we continue to respond to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting our regional communities and the broader visitor economy is more crucial than ever.
That’s why we have partnered with Telstra to deliver Free Wi-Fi Network services at key locations around the state for an additional four years, through to the end of 2024.
Telstra was contracted to build, operate and maintain the network, which has grown to include more than 170 access points at more than 70 locations around the state, including Salamanca Place, Cradle Mountain, Freycinet and Port Arthur, as well as regional locations such as Bridport, Queenstown, Derby, Oatlands, Sheffield, Latrobe, Geeveston, and Cygnet.
As part of the service, people can access 30-minutes of free Wi-Fi per device, per day, at no charge.
Minister for Science and Technology Michael Ferguson said as well as supporting visitor experiences, the network is also helping to connect vulnerable Tasmanians with support and services in the community.
“We know when Tasmanians are connected to digital services, they are healthier, safer, more productive and better able to connect with local, national and international communities,” Minister Ferguson said.
“Addressing the digital divide is a key component of our Digital Ready for Daily Life program, which coupled with the Free Wi-Fi Network is addressing internet access around the state, and providing Tasmanians with valuable locally based digital assistance and training sessions.
“The Tasmanian Liberal Government is pleased to have again partnered with Telstra and this renewed contract means we will provide a total of nine years of continuous free Wi-Fi services for tourists and Tasmanians.”
Telstra Enterprise Executive Gretchen Cooke said the network is an exciting project that will continue to boost digital connectivity for visitors, businesses and residents and create opportunities for the entire state to grow and thrive.
“This project is another example of Telstra co-investing with Government to bring fast and reliable Wi-Fi to public spaces across the nation, and deliver innovative programs and services via the Telstra Air network,” Ms Cooke said.
Telstra’s strong local presence will ensure the network is well maintained and able to meet user demand.
