The Tasmanian Government is a strong supporter of Football in Tasmania and we are committed to continuing to grow the game in the state.
As part of the 2020-21 State Budget, we will provide $300,000 extra over two years to Football Tasmania to increase growth and boost the profile of women and girls participating in football in the state, leveraging off the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This funding will also help to develop pathways and leadership opportunities for women in the sport.
We have previously committed funding to Football Tasmania of $350,000 per annum from 2017-18 through to 2020-21 to support grassroots football development and Football Tasmania’s men’s’ and women’s Talent Support programs. The extra funding for Football Tasmania in the 2020-21 Budget brings the annual allocation to $500,000 for this year and next.
Football Tasmania also received $150,000 from Tranche One of our Sport and Recreation COVID-19 Support Program to assist with salary costs of 15 of its staff and to mitigate the loss of income due to the pandemic.
Funding of $51,246 was also provided to 23 soccer clubs across Tasmania through the second tranche of the Program, supporting these clubs to purchase necessary equipment and supplies to return to play in a safe manner.
Women and girls make up 26 per cent of Tasmania’s registered players, the highest proportion of any state or territory in Australia. To that end, we have committed up to $1 million for three Tasmanian games as part of the successful joint Australia-New Zealand bid to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.
We will continue doing all we can to encourage greater participation across all sporting codes.
