Tasmanian Forest Industry - Statement of Principles

The former Premier, David Bartlett, has held preliminary talks with the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, about the historic Principles of Agreement to provide a secure and sustainable future for the Tasmanian forest industry.

"I'm very confident the Prime Minister understands the importance of this agreement for the future of Tasmania's timber industry," Mr Bartlett said.

"Having met with Ms Gillard, I'm equally confident that she understands the vital importance of the Australian Government playing a central role in implementing the agreement.

"As I said to the Prime Minister, Tasmania cannot do this alone.

"I primarily spoke to Ms Gillard about the importance of establishing a joint-governance mechanism - be that a taskforce or similar - to work with the key stakeholders to this agreement, in implementing it.

"The Prime Minister responded positively, and I've committed to going back to her with possible models for that joint-governance process," he said.

Mr Bartlett said there’s much analysis and planning required before specific questions of industry restructuring and possible compensation can be considered.

"That's why it's important to develop a governance structure as soon as possible, and ensure the Australian Government’s participation," Mr Bartlett said.
