Youth Conference Powering up for the Future

The Tasmanian Youth Conference is a vital opportunity for young people from all around Tasmania to hear from dynamic speakers, learn new skills and initiate projects.

It was my pleasure today to open the 2-day conference in Launceston (June 21 and 22) with the inspiring theme of Powering up for the Future.

The biennial Tasmanian Youth Conference is an initiative of the Youth Network Of Tasmania (YNOT) and received $40,000 from the Hodgman Liberal Government to run the 2015 and 2017 events.

The Tasmanian Government is strongly investing in young Tasmanians with a $25 million package in the State Budget that supports payroll tax relief and incentives for employing young apprentices and trainees and support for Whitelion’s Work Ready Program and the Beacon Foundation’s mentoring program in schools.

Last year we also invested $5 million into an innovative Collective Ed. Pilot project with the Paul Ramsey Foundation and Beacon which aims to strengthen education outcomes, school extensions to Year 11-12 and creating job ready Tasmanians.

The Conference engages young Tasmanians by providing an opportunity for young people and the youth sector to participate in positive skills development and networking opportunities through a number of interactive workshops.

The Conference also enables young people to get together with the wider youth sector to hear from dynamic speakers and initiate projects.

More than 300 young people and youth sector workers from all over Tasmania are expected to attend the Tasmanian Youth Conference and congratulations to the innovative team which put together this year’s event.

In addition to funding for the conferences, the Tasmanian Government also supports the peak-body YNOT with annual funding of $240,165.

The keynote speakers for this year’s Conference include Mark Morrissey (Commissioner for Children), Nicholas Marchesi and Lucas Patchett (Orange Sky Laundry, Young Australians of the Year 2016), James Riggall (Bitlink), Alex Snow (Foundation for Young Australians), Eva Mackinley (The Last Straw).
