I was honoured to represent the Liberal Government at the official unveiling of nine headstones for World War One veterans at Cornelian Bay Cemetery this afternoon.
The installation of gravestones for World War One veterans who rested in unmarked plots is being coordinated by the Tasmanian Headstone Project, led by historian Ms Andrea Gerrard.
The ceremony was an opportunity to recognise and honour the nine men, all who enlisted some one hundred years ago.
For a number of veterans who died in Tasmania after they returned from the War, their personal or financial circumstances meant that their graves were never marked or that since their interment, the marking of their grave has been lost.
The Liberal Government commends the work of the Tasmanian Headstone Project in ensuring that the service and lives of World War One veterans are respectfully recognised.
The work of the Project holds special significance as we start the commemorations of the Centenary of World War One.
